Pregnancy is a time when a woman has to be more careful about what she eats and drinks; you do not always realize it but the things a woman eats and drinks during pregnancy can really impact the pregnancy and the child (post-birth). Many obstetricians will advise that you keep your caffeine intake to less than 200mg a day; however, while hot cocoa can have some caffeine in it, it has some very nice benefits for pregnancy that might make consuming the caffeine worth being your daily allotment.
The caffeine. The range of damage caffeine can have during a pregnancy is something under big debate. Some studies suggest that consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy could increase the risk of miscarriage by 2x. Depending on the brand of hot cocoa, it will contain more or less caffeine. Hot cocoa K-Cups often are lower in caffeine count.
Antioxidants. We have talked about this one before; hot cocoa is a good source of antioxidants. You do want to be careful of these while you are pregnant, however, you can still get some great benefits from these when you drink hot chocolate K-Cups. Antioxidants work with your body to fight the free radicals from launching havoc on your body (and your baby's!). Free radicals can create health problems such as heart disease and even cancer. When consuming antioxidants during pregnancy, some studies have shown that this can lead to a baby less inclined to asthma and wheezing disorders.
